Today in class we talked about humanity’s tendency to not want to
accept ideas and theories that do not match theirs. We were given the example
of creationism vs. evolution, but in our discussion we assumed that the two
could not go together. We have already talked about the “cafeteria plan” for religion and I do not see why it could not also be applied here. To me at
least, both God and evolution can coexist.
We also discussed how the idea of the universe being infinite made
us feel. A few people answered that it scared them, but I love that the
universe is infinite. It makes me focus on the big picture less and become more
concerned about now. There are theories (for example string theory) that claim
in quantum physics it is absolutely reasonable to believe that several parallel
universes are simultaneously occurring. It is honestly sort of magical and
makes life so much more entertaining. But
this also brings me to my next thought. What if we are just not meant to
understand what the concept of infinity means? What if humans understanding
infinity is to a dog understanding physics?
