False Perceptions

What is our advantage as human beings? I do not believe that human beings have an advantage but rather use this title as a justification for our behavior. Because we are more ‘complex and advanced’ than all other species, our actions are vindicated; however, unlike animals who kill for survival, we kill for the fun of it or often times even out of irrational anger. We are no better than any animal that we deem lesser than ourselves. We are the same human beings we were millions of years ago, except now, we are fooling ourselves as to not experience the pain of acknowledging our flaw as a species. In fact, we are worse than our ancestors as at least they killed in the name to live. Now we kill in the name of ‘god’ or ‘science’. Its easier to think that because we are at the top of the food chain, our actions follow a rational or even spiritual path. But this more advanced path is just a disguise to hide the hurtful truth that we are no better than the filthy apes that we separated from.

  1. Wow, I sincerely agree with Ari. We do always distinguish ourselves from animals because we are capable of thinking, using logic, asking questions... But in reality, we really are no better than animals that cannot read or speak or "think" the way we do. Not only do we kill for God and science as Ari said, but also for absolutely no reason! We kill for irrational anger, serial killers kill for absolutely no reason, kind of like in "Crime and Punishment". Raskolnikov does not have a meaningful enough reason to kill another HUMAN, to take another life. He kills her simply because he does not like her and believes the world would be a better place without her. What is that??? That is incorrect. An animal would not kill another lion, for example, just because he led the pack incorrectly. I feel like this topic ties in a lot with "Crime and Punishment", another of Dostoevsky's famous works. I fervently agree with Ari's statement that "It's easier to think that because we are at the top of the food chain, our actions follow a rational...this more advanced path is just a disguise to hide the hurtful truth that we are no better than the filthy apes that we separated from".
