Discussion: 2/11/14

I can completely understand the idea that an individual’s feelings about a certain person can make him or her regard that person in a distorted way. If we don’t like a person, we are going to get irritated with everything that he or she does, regardless of whether or not it is actually bothersome. I find many people to be annoying, so I can definitely relate to what the narrator is talking about. I also found the narrator’s idea on purpose to be quite interesting. He claims that he would rather be called a “sluggard” (13) than to have no title at all; it gives him both an identity and a sense of purpose. Furthermore, I do think that the narrator struggles with his own identity, so this comment provides some more insight into his true character. He is in a constant battle of trying to determine where he fits into society and, more importantly, if he can fit into society.
