Religious Debate 2/6/14

Brace for a flurry of make-up posts…

Today we watched a debate between Bill Nye (aka. The “Science Guy”), whom I hold very dear to my heart, and some other Australian man who, to my understanding, owns a website dedicated to debunking scientific speculation that threatens the teachings of the Bible.

I attended Catholic school for 10 years, which I suppose makes me some kind of expert in the field, but I am also the product of an intensely skeptical father and a warily faithful mother, so I have been lucky enough to theoretically have attended a debate like this for those 10 years; in other words, science and religion had been equally thrust into my developmental period so I have never been biased until now.

I remember a time in the 5th grade when I had a debate like this myself, though it was much more juvenile and ended with me being reprimanded by my theology teacher and hated by one girl for the rest of my middle school career (totally worth it).  This girl was trying to convince me that she could have a sip of my drink, her argument being, and I quote, “We all have the same germs because we all came from Adam and Eve”. After laughing just a little bit, I proceeded to explain to her that this was impossible for two reasons:

  1.        The story of Adam and Eve is a parable
  2.        Even if it was historically proven to be a true occurrence, Adam and Eve bore two sons, and one of them brutally murdered the other, so unless you are implying incest, I really don’t see how that makes any sense.

And then she proceeded to try and tell me I was wrong and did not know anything.

My point is, though I enjoy the effort, these religious debates are unfortunately futile.
