Class Discussion (2/20) (Meagan Adler)

After today’s analytical class discussion, I was particularly intrigued by the idea of our most “advantageous advantage” (pg.17), independent choice.  We, as humans, distinguish ourselves from other animals and invalidate Darwinism, for we need the freedom of choice and the ability to act against society’s structured logic.  It would be terrifying if we were able to “calculate” our “whole life for thirty years before hand” (pg.19), for we would not have any control and our whole existence would be predetermined by what seems logical.  We fear control from an external force, regardless of whether or not this force might lead us to what would be in accordance with the laws of nature and make our lives easiest because we feel compelled to act out.  We need to act out in order to make sure we are still in control of ourselves, for it helps us ignore the infinite universe that ultimately controls us.
