Advantages

Today’s discussion was confusing at first.  I did not get the point that Dostoyevsky was trying to get by talking about advantages.  However, I was not alone in being confused.  I don’t think anyone in my class was completely sure about the relevance behind all of this.  After discussing this paragraph for most of the class, I finally think I understand it.  At the beginning of the paragraph, Dostoyevsky discusses religion and the Darwinian theory.  He says that humans sometimes do not do things in their own advantage.  I think we do this sometimes to show that we are in control of our life.  For example, this is shown by the example we brought up in class about how your parents may plan your life for you, but you go against it and don’t do what they want even if it was not in your own advantage.  We do this to show ourselves that we are in control of our lives and our parents are not.  I still do not understand this whole concept that we were discussing in class completely, so I will see more as we keep reading and discussing.
