Are we naturally selfish?

Today's discussion was probably the most important thus far because we analyzed the basis for Part 1 of the novel that later drives the creation of Part 2. Dostoyevsky discusses the idea of an "advantage" that humans are perceived to have. Moreover, he argues that Darwinism supports the idea that all animals are destined to act based on their self-driven motives every single time. The narrator later argues that perhaps this is not the case with humans and maybe evolution accurately characterizes every animal other than the human. I would have to argue against this for now because I believe that humans are always acting based on their own self interest. As we discussed during earlier lectures, even when people do something for someone else, in reality, it ends up being an act of selfishness at its core. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed today's lecture because it gave me more insight for the meaning of the novel itself than any of the other discussions.
