The Piano Key (Zane Mandell)

Every person is different from one another. “Some animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” While it may not be as appropriate for this subject matter, the line from animal farm does speak in a sense to what we were getting at today in class. We always tell ourselves that we are different from one another, not only because we are truly different but because we keep reassuring ourselves that we are different. The thing is that we are a creature who is intensely focus on fast gratification, so we do not like to just be told, rather we would prefer to do. So while we discuss this advantage I have come to realize that it is rooted in the idea that man is the only animal that seeks to want, not simply to need. We are in fact the only animal that wants; all other act out of need, this is again related to evolution. Circling back to my point, our advantage is only possible because we seek and want. We need the gratification of knowing that we are not a piano key time and again. We don’t want to be the piano key. If we were simply a piano key, well then what would be the point?
