Discussion: 2/18/14

I had assumed that the “most advantageous advantage” (15) that the narrator speaks about is free will and choice, as Carlye mentioned today in class. Defying one’s own best self-interest may appear to be detrimental, but in the long run, it is advantageous because the individual has the power of choice. People like having control over their lives, so the ability to make decisions is a very good thing for them. Simply living to survive is insufficient for humans. I agree with what Felipe said in class about happiness and pleasure; the option of free choice helps people reach a level of pleasure that would have otherwise been neglected. While a certain decision may not be in someone’s best interest, it could lead to a moment of pleasure and happiness, so, in that instant, the decision is worth the risk.
