The Most Advantageous Advantage

Today’s discussion reevaluated the idea of the “most advantageous advantage” for humans…the concept that unlike other animals, humans are not logical creatures and they have the ability to be unpredictable and act against their own best interest. In my opinion, I believe that Dostoyevsky’s point is an extremely important one because it portrays the major difference between humans and all other animals. Moreover, it allows one to understand why humans have advanced the most quickly out of all animals. The ability to act against one’s own best interest allows for an element of unpredictability that is not present with any animal but the human.
I also enjoyed today’s lecture because I was able to pose my question from last night’s post concerning whether or not Dostoyevsky was attempting to explain humanity himself. After a discussion, I began to understand that the author is merely explaining that no belief system (whether it be religion, Darwinism, etc.) is based on fact. Therefore, one belief system cannot be considered more legitimate than another because there is no factual basis.
