Suffering

Today’s discussion was less controversial than usual because the main ideas were fairly relatable.  In particular, I would like to focus on the passage where the narrator talks about a toothache and how people continue to pick at it and moan and moan as if they enjoy the pain. We argued that people moan when they are feeling any sort of pain because it yields attention. If people are alone in bed, they will not be constantly whining and complaining through their pain. However, when other people are present, people moan loud enough to get other people worrying about them because they cannot stand being the only person suffering. I definitely agree with these ideas because I believe that it relates to the idea that people are always thinking about themselves. People enjoy suffering because it ends up being a means of getting them attention. The more pain someone is undergoing, usually the more attention, and hence, the more they enjoy it.
