Before the period ended, we were asked what we thought the
point of reading Notes from the Underground was, and if the book was going to
impact our life. Honestly, I think the book is a training method for
strengthening the analytical part of our brain, but I really don’t think it is
going to change my life that much. If anything, my idea of religion has
changed, but then I realized it is just as unbelievable as evolution. At first,
Dostoyevsky had me sold with evolution, but then he also shows that evolution
is just as unreliable as religion. Another topic discussed was the idea that we
try to or at least pretend to be offended when someone we dislike is talking.
Anything we can do to justify what they said as offensive, we do; it’s probably
the weirdest and most humiliating concept we have come across so far in
Dostoyevsky.
