2/19

Dostoyevsky has made a valid point, and I have made a conclusion that finally puts me at ease.

Today we discussed the greatest point to be made about human nature: we like to see that things are destroyed- but why? At first, it appeared to me that Dostoyevsky was accusing mankind as being selfish, greedy, bloodthirsty, and very “Freudian”. Not that any of this is wrong, of course, for as he mentions, we have our history as proof, and even the most peaceful of humans display some type of behavior related to these dastardly descriptions. Today, we discover a new point being made, and I would like to see it under a rational, if not, optimistic light; we become bored of monotony, so a perfect  world, though ideal and peaceful, would not last, so we seek to destroy it to keep the cycle going, to prevent society from becoming stagnant.

There is nothing more exhilarating than the sensations brought by new things and fresh beginnings. Who doesn’t love the smell of a new car, the sensation of new love, the purity of a new appliance, the virgin white sheets of a new sketchbook, the joy brought by a new pet- we all find more excitement in new things than in things we have gotten used to. Now, I do not mean to say that once your puppy grows into an old dog, you will get bored of it and run it over for the sake of it (unless you’re that kind of person, in which case, please refrain from owning animals or having children), but as nice as that faithful old dog might be, there was nothing quite like the early, energetic, adorable first moments when you got him. We will never be able to convince everyone to follow one belief, but we also will never be able to stop wanting to try, and I am fine with this, so long as they do not bring annoyance into my life, which they inevitably will, but that is for me to learn how to cope with.

I wear a metal bracelet on my right wrist that bears the quote “THIS TOO SHALL PASS”, which you could say is a mantra of mine, because there is nothing more calming than understanding that the bad and good will come and go, no matter what. The world will not stand still, hopefully, or at least mankind will continue to progress for the better until I die.
