Discussion: 2/10/14

The narrator’s explanation on enjoying pain provided me with somewhat of an understanding about what he was referring to. I think the act of moaning is an attempt to both elicit sympathy from others and to share one’s own pain. The phrase “misery loves company” is very fitting with this idea. The enjoyment that the narrator is referring to may be connected to a feeling of inclusion, which is something that is lacking for him. He is so isolated from the rest of the world that it must feel good for him to relate to others on some level. Regardless of the type of feeling that the narrator is experiencing, if another individual is feeling the same thing as him, then there is some sort of connection between the two. Moaning will in not physically help pain, but it may be of emotional assistance. The individual that is hurt will be able to release his or her frustration, in addition to gaining the sympathy and attention of others.
