Complex creatures

We as human beings are always striving to reach some sort of goal: be it finishing school, getting a job promotion, buying a nice house, reaching retirement, etc. But once we approach that goal, we start to freak out because the goal is about to disappear. We worked so hard for so long to reach that goal, just to let it slip away in the blink of an eye and become yet another memory we reflect upon in the future. Humans are not satisfied easily. We are selfish, complex, and greedy creatures who always want more than what we have. Reaching our "destination" will never be enough for us, until we meet our true "destination" (death) and can no longer complain or worry about slaving away towards a new one. In addition to that, I think that people like to be miserable. We like to have something to complain about, to stress over, to worry about. We are never truly happy with what we have and we take everything for granted, no matter how well off we are. In retrospect, I get where Dostoyevsky is coming from in NFTU. People derive pleasure from pain. It gives them something to focus on, to keep them from getting bored. Without misery, sadness, anger, pain, jealousy, or whatever other negative emotions us humans harbor for petty reasons, our lives would essentially be uninteresting.
