Discussion: 2/5/14

After today’s discussion of an infinite universe, I have realized that this idea is quite frightening, in addition to being a bit annoying. Humans are unable to perceive the idea of an infinite universe; we need limits. I think our inability to do so is what is the most frustrating; we cannot fathom what it means to be limitless. The thing I found frightening about this type of universe is that we would be so detached from the world as we know it today. Traveling in space for an endless amount of time and living forever seems terrifying, but boring at the same time. The unknown is scary, so something as vague and mysterious as space is horrifying. Plus, there is nowhere to end up in an infinite universe; there is no goal. As humans, we need a goal that we can progress towards; if not, then what is the point of life?
