Discussion Post 3

Today was very interesting; we hit a lot of points that I had not considered before. What I found particularly interesting was Dostoyevsky’s commentary on the “sublime and beautiful” and how he is unable to suppress his want and need to destroy all that is “beautiful and sublime”. He mentions throughout the piece how he wishes that he could be like everyone else and able to accept the “sublime and beautiful”, but as we saw today in class everyone when upset will want to mess with other people’s happiness, so there is nothing really different about him. I know when ever I’m upset with my parents I will disagree with everything they say, even if a half an hour earlier I would have agreed with them. He is just the exaggeration of all the inherent contradictions of humanity and I think he is being a little dramatic and needs to get over it. Sometimes I try to think of what kind of therapy he needs, but I always come to the conclusion that he cannot be helped.
