Class Discussion (2/6) (Meagan Adler)

After watching today's debate in class, I was intrigued by the academic arguments between evolutionism and creationism and the support used to promote each of them. In relation to Dostoyevsky's novel, I feel like we can better understand the daunting idea of evolution in the sense that it invalidates everything everyone believed in before and breaks down the metaphorical wall that we depend on and furthermore need to feel secure. When someone is breaking down this wall and telling you that everything that you have believed is not true, it is significantly impacting and furthermore affects your approach to life. We need these barriers in order to live, we need to be contained in order to progress. As we have transitioned to accept evolution and incorporate it with our religious beliefs we, in the 21st century have created a new wall that those in the “unhappy" 19th century were incapable of creating.
