Discussion

I agree with Shannon that the Underground Man has a superiority complex. From the beginning of the book, he has always deemed himself as superior and more important than everybody else. No matter who he talks to or about, in his mind, he is the most important . Just because he is oddly intelligent for his time and age, does not mean he has the right to look down upon the rest of society. Yes, he is superior in the sense of intelligence, but he is inferior in the sense that he is a recluse from the rest of the human race. He hides from humanity because he is afraid of not being accepted for who he is , when in realty he is the one who pushes humanity away as a whole. He is the perfect example of wanting to have his cake and eat it too.
