The Bullied to the Bullier

Today in class the idea that Adriana presented that the narrator acts out of spite to bring everyone down to his level of misery because he wants to play on an equal playing field with the world was quite interesting and informative. I do believe that his jealousy stems from his perception that everyone is content with their lives as is; however, the narrator cannot follow the same guidelines that civilization abides by. As a result, because he is no longer capable of experiencing any sort of bliss because of his cynical vantage point, he does in fact out of spite.
Also, I believe Megan touched on a central point of the novel that the narrator is fighting against multiple parts of his mind. I believe to novel to be a clash of fantasy versus reality where the fantasy aspect is a glimpse inside of his mind. His fantasy is his repressed capabilities to the sensitive, compassionate man that society deems to be feminine due to gender roles. His reality is the hard shell exterior that he acts on at the expense of others. In conclusion, the narrator was the little child who was bullied his schoolmates (society), and as a result, has reacted negatively and become the bully himself as to not ever experience that kind of torture again.
