Consciousness (Zane Mandell)

“To be too conscious is an illness (3)”. This subject is one that I feel very passionately about and is one that has been discussed on some level in class. ‘To know that you cannot know’ is sickening. It is like showing the person an open doorway towards their goal and then promptly shutting it in their face a throwing away the key. Those who know want to reopen this door because it is just out of reach. While it can be said there is nothing that man cannot put his mind to it should also be true that one man cannot put his mind to everything, there is simply not enough time and resources. But to the point I believe that knowledge is a gift with a curse. Just like the speaker of the novel alludes to already, he has given up on the outside world; he has settled in his corner (3). It is too hard for him to be “cleverer” (5). Consciousness is a product of evolution, it makes each of us unique, but I can begin to see the path underground where the speaker is leading us towards. I just wonder if there is light at the end of this tunnel deep underground.
