Appearances

Appearances seem to mean a great deal to the narrator. This was shown at the end of today’s reading, but also at the beginning of the second part of the novel. All the ideas are intertwining! They are actually making sense. This part was particularly sad because the appearance of Liza at the time was described as youthful and beautiful. But the narrator decided to tell her how her life would end, assuming he would be right. He was partly correct, but Liza did have one person who was capable of loving her, and that was her treasure. The appearance of breaking her heart made the narrator uncomfortable in the situation, in which he then apologized and tried to leave as quickly as possible. Appearances should not be such a big deal. He is obsessed with his, explaining that his face is monstrous at the beginning of the second part, as well as other people’s appearance such as Liza and his coworkers.
