Fourth Reading

Tonight’s reading of Notes from the Underground was definitely the most interesting for me thus far because it dealt with an idea that I have thought about in depth before. Dostoevsky discusses the concept that humans are never content with what they have already accomplished and the fact that they are always looking for more to do. Moreover, he emphasizes that humans are almost afraid of thinking that they are “done” with what they have to do and because of that they set forth new tasks to keep themselves going because what would they have to live for if there was nothing else to work for? I find this compelling because I agree with him and I think that it is completely accurate that humans can never think that they are “finished”. No matter how old we get, we are always thinking into the future and what else we have to do to get even farther. Although this is not necessarily bad, I think it would benefit most people to relax for a little bit and stop looking forward so much.
