Overall, although the reading was short, it definitely supported my expectations. Prior to beginning the novel, I had heard from other students that it was extremely difficult to read and understand but that it was also unique and captivating. As soon as I read the first paragraph, I found myself lost. One issue I realized is that this novel is different from all the others that I have ever read because it requires the reader’s complete, undivided attention for every single word. Usually, I can zone out for a portion of a paragraph and get away with it. With Notes from the Undergound, there were already multiple passages that I had to read carefully two or three times.
In relation to the content in the work thus far, I have found the narrator’s approach interesting to say the least. I found it strange that one would begin speaking of themselves with such a high level of negativity. As he begins describing himself, the narrator comments on how unattractive and simple he is compared to everyone else. Later, he takes the reader through an analysis of life that is both confusing and entertaining. Though I will probably have to review the reading again before continuing the novel, I have thoroughly appreciated the work up to now.
