Part 4: "A tyrant at heart" (Alexia Barrios)

I really cannot help but feel bad for the narrator. It is apparent that he has some serious issues ranging from those that I previously mentioned in my other posts and now his desire to be admired but those whose company he doesn't even enjoy. Clearly his early life had a negative effect on him and was probably the source of many of his internal issues. Since he was an orphan who thanks to his antisocial behavior and some other factors, never truly experienced love and for that reason he was probably never able to form true connections and hold relationships with other. This is evident as he described the one friendship he had. Due to the constant humiliation that he went through, he craved power and superiority over his fellow classmates, not wanting “their affection; on the contrary I (the narrator) longed their humiliation”. By the time this one friendship occurred he was “a tyrant at heart” and for that reason the friendship fell apparent and the “simple and devoted soul” that was his friend was “reduced to tears, to hysterics” because the narrator was repulsed by him.
