Notes from the Underground Part Two

During our discussion in class today several people commented that they we having a hard time understanding Dostoyevsky because they never knew when the speaker was joking or lying and when he was telling the truth. His constant contradictions left us conflicted of his motive in writing this novel. These same problems also left me very confused and frustrated. From what I have interpreted I have come to the conclusion that what this novel is trying to show the reader is that there is not reason to try to find reason. But how can you function as a human being living like that? No wonder the speaker is so upset with humanity. I think the speaker is trying to get the reader to stop questioning why people do what they do, that in the end we are all over thinking everything, and that we’s all be happier if we stopped trying to understand the reason why things happen.
