Finishing Off

The way the novel ends is something that I did not really expect at all. In fact, I really expected the novel to end with the narrator’s death in some way because I could not really imagine any other way that the narrator would suddenly stop recounting his thoughts. Moreover, although I did not expect it, the ending of the work was truly captivating. I felt as if Dostoevsky could not have concluded the novel in a better form because he essentially tells the reader that if he kept on with the narrator’s thoughts, the book would never end. Again, as with other parts of the novel that I have mentioned, I believe that the idea presented at the end of the novel is one that can be related to our own thoughts because if one were to recount all of our thoughts when we were dead it would be impossible to include everything. People are constantly thinking and thinking and perhaps even think past their death. Overall, I felt that reading Notes from the Underground might have been the most interesting portion of this year’s class so far. The novel made me think about ideas that I had never really considered, yet I could easily relate to.
