Considering that I was told Notes From the Underground would be one of the
hardest novels that I would ever read in my life, I’m not having too bad of a
time reading it. I have found the structure of the novel very
interesting, mostly because there is not much structure. Dostoyevsky writes in
a continuous flow of consciousness, I feel as if I am reading a very thorough
diary and each section is a new day and a new perspective on the same idea. I have found the theme in the first 15 pages of Notes From the Underground to be the idea of reason. The speaker
appears to me to be very cynical towards humanity. It was
hard after reading the speaker’s criticism on reason and his opinion that it
does not exist to then go to my other classes such as economics where all
theories and graphs we study only work assuming that people function
reasonably.
