Notes From The Underground Part Five

Although I enjoyed to first part of the novel more than I am currently enjoying the second part, I feel that the second part of the novel has given me a lot of insight into the ideas he described in part one as well of many of his mannerisms while writing.  On page 33 Dostoyevsky writes “I don’t what to lie, I vowed to myself I would not”, which is think is one of the reasons why in part one he is constantly writing, “gentlemen, I am joking”. He wants to avoid lying, but doesn’t believe in truth.
The story in part two also reminded me a lot of the Kafka novels we read earlier this year. Dostoyevsky’s character admits to alternating between despising his peers and thinking them superior. At times he despises his peers because of their ignorance, but then thinks them superior because of their ability to happily live ignorance.

It has been hard to come to a conclusion on this novel and Dostoyevsky’s ideas because he argues throughout the novel that reason does not exist, so without reason how can one come to a definite answer, you can’t.
