I understand him

At the end of the first part of Notes From the Underground, the man states "I shall perhaps obtain actual relief from writing (28)." To me, this is completely relatable. At times, especially when I was younger, when I do not know how I feel about something, I tend to write about it. I have always found that writing my feelings and thoughts down on paper has helped in a therapeutic way. For some reason, it helps being able to physically see the inner workings of my brain in ink. The Underground man says "For some reason I believe that if I write it down I should get rid of it (28)." This might not make sense to everybody, after all it does seem quite silly that writing things down would "cure" you of an ill feeling or negative thoughts, but it does work. When something is in your head you just want to get it out, and to be able to express yourself is one of the most beautiful things in life. People should write because they can.
