Call Me Crazy

In my third reading of Notes from the Underground, I found myself understanding the narrator maybe a little too much. The narrator is constantly throwing out ideas and he essentially provides an analysis of his own thoughts along with an analysis of his surroundings. In doing these things, he comes off at first as almost insane or as having some sort of disease that prevents him from filtering his thoughts. Not only did the reading feature a consistent plethora of ideas and thoughts, but the narrator also did it in a way that could be characterized as both cynical and sarcastic. As I mentioned before, the reader naturally diagnoses the narrator with some sort of psychological disorder. However, when I really began to think about the content, I realized that nearly all of the ideas made perfect sense and that the narrator’s thought process was very similar to my own. Just today I have caught myself thinking about one meaningless thing that leads to a paranoia about another seemingly unrelated idea. Overall, I believe that the narrator is “onto something” with his thoughts and I do not think that his way of thinking can allow one to call him insane.
