Lost is a Sickening Cycle

For the first entry of this blog I feel it is necessary to say that before reading this book, after your intense warning, I was afraid to even read the first lines. And I am happy to say that although lengthy in terms of time taken to read a single page I am enjoying Notes from the Underground as I already have a deep connection with the narrator. I feel as if his personality parallels a close family member of mine that also has psychological issues.
In the mess of his free association writing style, the narrator’s journal written directly to its reader is quite intriguing. The narrator is similar to a sponge as he soaks in all the emotions of his apparent surroundings. He believes happiness is a facade as society strips it away as soon as one achieves it and forms a strong hatred towards it. This hatred is rooted in his jealousy of other’s ability to go through the motions that is life. He feels as if something is wrong with him because he stuck in a sickening maze that his mind creates.
I have a large level of compassion towards the narrator, and although I know it will be time consuming to continue reader, I can’t wait to see where the narrator’s mind takes him. So far I have found interesting his hatred on the social institutions as well as people themselves. He has yet to realize that people are indeed happy to go through the motions, but it is constant self doubt that allows him to separate from the pact and write this fascinating story to the class and I.
