Notes from the Underground is definitely one of the more
dense books I’ve read, yet, I feel like I am getting a good idea of what
Dostoyevsky is trying to say. From what I understand, and truthfully I could be
completely wrong, I think he views life in the most negative light possible. He
is highly aware of his surroundings, his actions, and others at all times. He
looks down upon himself, and instead of accepting the flaws and nature of humanity;
he mentally fights it, which eventually lowered his self-confidence. Even in
the beginning he admits to being “sick” for forty years. In reality, he is not
sick, maybe slightly mentally, but I don’t think what he is saying is that
strange, besides the fact that he is babbling, which he even admits to. The
only part of the first fifteen pages I didn’t understand was the “wall” he kept
referring to. Besides this, I am surprised to find myself somewhat enjoying his
theories of life and mankind.
