Betrayed

In the third segment of reading I found out that the narrator is like the child who wants to desperately be punished by his parents because then the child would realize that his parents do in fact care about him. When illustrating the bar fight to the reader, I made the assumption that the narrator wants to feel pain because at least pain is associated with fear and hurt. The narrator, at this point, is desperate to feel anything whether it be pain or happiness.
This conclusion that I have made made me feel large amounts of sympathy towards the narrator. His only sort of bliss is dreaming; however, reality is always ready in the background to creep right up and stab his dreams in the heart. Like people, the narrator’s emotions are constantly failing him. He is such a cynic to the point that even in the first moment of bliss that he describes, he decides to turn back to his comfort zone of misery as he believes it is impossible to experience long periods of prolonged happiness.
